What do you mean by data liberation? Do you mean the use of host-your-own, federated / distributed networks, possibly with encryption and privacy controls built in? Do you mean the use of trustworthy centralized services that allow users to import or export their data at will, in an open standard format? |

Do you mean to promote such efforts by educating the public, or by seeking legislation and regulation? |

Do you mean to come up with a list of approved sites and host-your-own software, such that Internet users can consult this list before joining or installing? |

These questions are meant more as a way to get you to clarify your objectives than anything else. Feel free not to respond, but please keep them in mind as you sharpen your focus. |

So, I mentioned data liberation very early: http://irclog.greptilian.com/spanworm/2013-02-08#i_2720 |

Pretty much, I'm thinking of the latter case, of using trusted services that allow you to get your data out. Google is pretty good about data liberation. Recently, Twitter started letting you download your tweets. |

I hear Tumblr doesn't let you download your content very easily, as a counter example. |

Now, I'm absolutely in favor of run-you-own as well... installing your own pump.io server or what have you... I saw a nice example of this at http://jpope.org/about and I listed all the services at http://irclog.greptilian.com/spanworm/2013-02-28#i_3655 ... http://owncloud.org and the like... |

But... I'm a pragmatist. I certainly don't want to host certain services myself (such as email) ... so I settle for trying to only use services that allow me to get my data back out. |

(I do have a Tumblr account at http://pdurbin.tumblr.com by the way, but I don't write anything original there. For me it's just a place for me to post funny pictures I see on the Internet.) |

Hmm, I just looked through my past posts here and I don't believe I've mentioned making a list of "approved sites" ... but I do think this is a good idea... and as services change they could be added to or removed from the list. |

Tumblr could be added if they start offering data liberation. |
18:50 |

Google+ could be removed if they stop letting people download their data. |

As for education vs. legistation, I'm not much of an activist. I'm happy for people to think... "this guy's right about data liberation" ... but I would never be pushy about what people should do with their data. |

One more thing about hosting service yourself... At http://irclog.greptilian.com/spanworm/2013-02-09#i_2914 I talked about how I pay for hosting for the logs of this channel. |
18:56 |
|
pdurbin |
It doesn't cost much. 20 bucks a month. |
18:57 |
|
pdurbin |
I guess I'd like to see more of this... more of ordinary people paying a little money per month to host content and services for each other. |

Sure, most people would never do this. Too much effort or fuss. And how good are people at renewing domains... keeping the content up so you can link to it... |

This is basically the idea behind Dave Winer's http://ec2.forpoets.org ... that you can easily and cheaply publish your poems for the world to see. |

You know, I shouldn't knock Tumblr too much... at least they let you host the content on your own domain (for free, I believe) which is the important thing in terms of "cool URIs don't change": http://irclog.greptilian.com/spanworm/2013-02-09#i_2998 |
