I'm curious what Josh means by "publisher sites"... "In this world of networked platforms, I don't think quality conversations will ever exist on publisher sites again" -- http://branch.com/b/the-best-platform-for-discussion-online-doesn-t-exist-yet#wheOdoXJZ58 |

from the techcrunch article: "This older era of commenting - blogging 2.0, if you will – was in many ways a simpler time. It was a time when posts even had trackbacks, so you could see who had linked to you from their own blog" |

"blogging 2.0" reminds me a lot of Anil Dash's "The Web We Lost" post: http://irclog.greptilian.com/spanworm/2013-02-09#i_2899 |

She ends her techcrunch article with "The real change that commenting sections need, both here on TechCrunch and elsewhere on the web, isn’t ripping out one old, outdated technology and replacing it with another. We’re ready for a radical overhaul that reflects how people are communicating and sharing information today; one that shows which comments or shares have resonated and why, and one that understands who deserves to be heard." |

I feel like everyone agrees the commenting on the Internet is broken, that discussion doesn't work very well. |

that commenting |

"Who deserves to be heard" sounds harsh... but I guess it makes sense. No one likes trolls. |

which reminds me... this made me smile: "I just want to say that of all the comments to various items that allow commenting on the web, these were probably the most civil, well-written, thoughtful collection that also included differences of opinion. I have hope." -- http://scienceblogs.com/webeasties/2012/02/21/the-future-of-science-pub/#comment-978 |

Maybe the problem is not the technology involved in commenting systems... maybe commenting and discussion simply breaks down when the site is very large and gets lots of traffic. |

i.e. "Why do news websites allow user comments on stories? Nothing of value is *ever* added." -- https://twitter.com/jonahbishop/status/304688647511359489 |

But sharing ideas is great when it works well: "Medium is based on the belief that the sharing of ideas and experiences is what moves humanity forward. The Internet is the greatest idea-sharing tool ever imagined, but we’ve only scratched the surface of its capabilities." -- https://medium.com/about/9e53ca408c48 |

that's from Evan Williams' "Welcome to Medium" post. I like his bio: "I make systems that encourage typing and thinking (Blogger, Twitter, Medium)." -- https://medium.com/@ev |

"While easy to trivialize what it’s often used for, the fact that most of humanity has the power of a printing press at their fingertips—easy to use and available for free—is a pretty amazing advancement for civilization. It’s an advancement that has irreversibly impacted society, from pop culture to politics and everything in between." |

"It’s not too late to rethink how online publishing works and build a system optimized for quality, rather than popularity. Where anyone can have a voice but where one has to earn the right to your attention. A system where people work together to make a difference, rather than merely compete for validation and recognition. A world where thought and craftsmanship is rewarded more than knee-jerk reactions." |

This reminds me of the "New Publishing Platforms" Google Doc that Anil Dash started recently: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aif6hhXGHN28dFFiNjlGQUUzMENkV3luaXl5ZVpPcWc&usp=sharing |

41 different sites... and to be honest, I'm not sure I see the commonality between them all. Of course, I haven't heard of most of them. |

actually, I've only heard of 4 from that list of 41: http://medium.com http://quora.com http://squarespace.com http://wordpress.org |

As I've said before, I'm only interested in publishing systems I can get my data out of: http://irclog.greptilian.com/spanworm/2013-02-08#i_2727 |
