"Also, I had an idea about how to keep distributed conversations in sync. Here's the problem: Alice has two followers on two different servers, Bob and Charlie, who don't follow each other. Alice posts a note and Bob posts a comment in reply to that note. How does Charlie see Bob's comment? I think the right way to do it is that Alice's account should automatically "share" any local or remote objects that are posted in reply to something she pos |

"posted. The "share" should be to the original recipients of the first post. I think that will go a long way towards getting stuff synchronized. I'm going to try to work on it tonight. What it _won't_ fix is replies-to-replies, but since the current Web UI doesn't do that, anyway, I'm not going to worry about it too much." -- https://e14n.com/evan/note/ROpZQsLqRYCJdIqJFfHj6w |

I feel like Dave Winer has already worked on keeping conversations (or at least blog comments) in sync: http://irclog.greptilian.com/spanworm/2013-02-08#i_2752 |

"Social networks are isolated and disconnected. People put their creative works, their social graph, and their personal connections into services with dubious terms of service. Service providers depend on the network effect to prevent healthy competition. We must federate the social web." -- The Social Web is not federated · Issue #1 · e14n/pump.io - https://github.com/e14n/pump.io/issues/1 |

what a great manifesto :) |

I'm a little torn... I want to give some feedback about pump.io and microca.st but I'm unclear about the data liberation strategy so I'll just type here instead. |
03:39 |
|
pdurbin |
Let's focus on the positive first... |
03:40 |
|
pdurbin |
pump.io seem great from what I've read at http://pump.io and https://github.com/e14n/pump.io |
03:40 |
|
pdurbin |
right up my alley |
03:41 |
|
pdurbin |
it seems to be the next generation of StatusNet |
03:43 |
|
pdurbin |
Evan is doing some great work here |
03:44 |
|
pdurbin |
but |
03:44 |
|
pdurbin |
:) |
03:45 |
|
pdurbin |
I'm finding https://e14n.com/evan (for example) a little hard to follow |
03:46 |
|
pdurbin |
maybe all it needs is better indenting... or separation between posts... maybe an <hr> tag between posts :) |
03:46 |
|
pdurbin |
so I can tell when one ends and another begins |
03:48 |
|
pdurbin |
the other thing that's bothering me a bit... |
03:50 |
|
pdurbin |
is that I uploaded a picture of myself as part of the account creation process and the picture got posted in my stream (google+ style) and i can't delete it, which I reported here already: https://github.com/e14n/pump.io/issues/250#issuecomment-14090271 |
03:55 |
|
pdurbin |
that is to say... i don't think you can delete any posts right now |
03:55 |
|
pdurbin |
which is fine since there's an issue tracking this :) |
03:56 |
|
pdurbin |
anyway, I'm sure it will evolve :) |
03:57 |
|
pdurbin |
oh, I should mention I found out about microca.st from fab of linux outlaws fame: https://plus.google.com/u/1/105047371315992982745/posts/1JFLWobgc1H |
03:57 |
|
pdurbin |
not gonna try to spell his last name |
04:03 |
|
pdurbin |
I guess the last thing I'd like to mention is that I really like reading from top to bottom and like so many other sites like Twitter and StatusNet and Google+ and blogs of all stripes, I don't feel like pump.io helps in this regard. |
04:03 |
|
pdurbin |
Maybe there will be a killer pump.io mobile app that lets me read from top to bottom. |
04:04 |
|
pdurbin |
That's part of why I like writing here. And reading it later. I pick a spot to start reading and just march down, clicking next page if I want to read more. It's not all backwards like blogs or Twitter. |
04:06 |
|
pdurbin |
ok... i posted a link back to here: https://microca.st/pdurbin/note/YjOw7cSsS2O0m4Uv4Zq7LA |

If anyone would rather leave a comment here rather than on microca.st, the easiest way is via http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=spanworm |
13:24 |
|
pdurbin |
Oh, one other important thing about pump.io... it's not clear to me how to comment on someone's post. And when I try I get a scary message... |

If I try to log in to https://e14n.com/evan (with a remote account) I see this: "Authorize. You are logged in as pdurbin. Do you want to authorize e14n.com to access your account? Applications with access to your account can: Post new activities as you, Read your social graph (followers, following, list), Change your profile" |

I don't *think* I want to give such broad access to post as me, etc... so I'm not clicking "Authorize" |
