04:58 codex pdurbin: i've gone back and forth between bash and perl quite a bit. My current view is that if it uses native linux commands/input/output -- bash is it. Once you need any kind of loop structure/decision tree - bash becomes obsolete (imo).
04:59 codex Yes you can technically "do it", but it's just aweful, clumsy, and it feels like regexes in python ;)
04:59 codex "baked on top"
10:58 pdurbin yeah, I don't like arrays in bash either
16:52 bear i'm the same but bash+python
19:03 dotplus pdurbin: no, the longforminess is part of my thinking. Part of the reason for allowing for/encouraging/enabling async is to allow for considered responses (when the discussion requires it).
19:06 dotplus hm. I guess I should consider this carefully and write a proper essay.
19:06 * dotplus adds to the list
19:39 pdurbin dotplus: I would definitely read your essay.
19:40 pdurbin The problem is, people's attention spans are shrinking.
23:22 sivoais The other problem with bash for distribution is that it depends so much on the userland. You have to avoid any of the GNU-isms even if they are useful.
23:24 sivoais oh, haha, so on Windows there are many people that use Git Bash as their bash shell, but some of the userland GNU tools included with it are about 15 years old.
