i am slowly making that transition myself |
| 00:07 |
|
semiosis |
moving from eclipse to phpstorm for php/web development |
| 00:07 |
|
semiosis |
and tonight i'm going to install the new intellij idea 12 preview to do some hacking on logstash (jruby) |
| 00:08 |
|
semiosis |
but i'm pretty happy with eclipse for pure java dev for now |

it looks like the professor who taught this class i took a few years ago is still a big fan on intellij ... "A commercial IDE that has won the approval of advanced Java developers is IntelliJ IDEA" -- http://courses.dce.harvard.edu/~cscie160/resources.html |

i feel like you guys are saying intellij is better than eclipse which better than netbeans |
| 00:16 |
|
westmaas |
sounds about right |
| 00:16 |
|
semiosis |
well intellij (and all jetbrains products) is commercially licensed, though they do have a free community edition, it's for pure java dev only, not polyglot development |
| 00:16 |

yes |
| 00:16 |
|
semiosis |
as far as open source IDEs go (which is basically NB vs Eclipse) i think eclipse has much more mindshare & momentum |
| 00:17 |
|
semiosis |
large ecosystem of plugins & tools around it |
| 00:34 |
|
pdurbin |
of the 3 i've only used eclipse. it seemed... ok. i'm much more comfortable in vim |
| 00:43 |
|
semiosis |
i can't imagine doing java dev in vi |
| 00:44 |
|
semiosis |
i think intellij has a vim mode tho |
| 00:44 |
|
semiosis |
idk if eclipse does |
| 00:45 |
|
semiosis |
one of the coolest things about eclipse is the refactoring and real-time compilation |
| 00:45 |
|
semiosis |
so you can 1) rename a method and eclipse will smartly rename all the calls (refactoring) or 2) rename a method (not refactoring) and eclipse will highlight all the calls to that method that broke, in all the files in your projects |

semiosis: i did the first 3 assignments for that class in vim, then switched to eclipse for the last 4 |

installing the idea 12 preview release now. excited :) |
| 01:03 |
|
pdurbin |
the free version? i'd only need it for java anyway |
| 01:04 |
|
semiosis |
i'm using the pre-release preview of idea 12, which will be officially released in december |
| 01:04 |
|
semiosis |
and it comes with a 30 day trial |
| 01:04 |
|
semiosis |
i am trying the full version, because i am going to use it to develop on logstash which is jruby |
| 01:05 |
|
semiosis |
and the free version doesn't do polyglot, just pure java |

usually meaning non-java langs on jvm, though idea can do non-jvm langs too like php, html/js, etc |
| 01:06 |
|
semiosis |
none of that is avail in the free vers. afaik |

i'm somewhat irrationally and maniacally addicted to free as in beer software... http://irclogger.com/.vagrant/2012-11-29#1354251002 |
