02:29 dotplus I think I'm ok at the abstract logical level with the concept of requiring some kind of registration/authentication in order to defeat spam. I don't mind if it takes a few minutes to learn how to play - iff the instructions are clear and easy for anyone with basic computer/Net skills to follow.
02:35 dotplus I definitely approve of a straightforward UX and tools that get out of your way, but that doesn't mean that anything prevents a learning curve of ~zero is anathema
10:02 pdurbin The current docs and UX aren't sufficient for my casual users. If the spam hits, I might need to switch to something else. Maybe Gitter. I don't know.
14:35 pdurbin Do we think that freenode adding +R user mode by default is temporary? +R is "block unidentified": "Ignores private messages from users who are not identified with services." I've never seen this in 6+ years of using freenode.
14:38 pdurbin "Due to the persistent ongoing spam, all new connections are being set +R (block messages from unidentified users)..."
15:37 dotplus ask?
15:37 dotplus in #freenode
15:53 pdurbin I could ask or I could wait and see what happens.
19:49 bear the question would be if a channel would not be allowed to remove +R
23:00 pdurbin That would be an even bigger change. My point is that defaults are changing. Norms are changing. Maybe they're temporary. Time will tell. Defaults matter.
