02:17 pdurbin Any thoughts on this article? https://m.signalvnoise.com/is-group-chat-making-you-sweat-744659addf7d
04:40 dotplus first glance says it's worth reading carefully. second glance says "read this when I'm awake and not oncall". I suspect this is something that I want to bring up with our Director:)
11:39 pdurbin I was asked what I think about chat here: https://twitter.com/JeffSpies/status/708123813830119425
21:36 bear it has a lot of great points, some of them we are battling here - irc vs slack vs email;   polling vs notifications
21:41 * pdurbin turned off notifications in hipchat today
23:47 pdurbin Generally speaking, one must have discipline when in comes to chat, and email for that matter, especially when it comes to not letting it distract you.
23:48 pdurbin Don't let either one make you sweat. :)
23:48 bear *nods*
23:48 bear the hard part is guiding young folk thru the pain/learning process so they internalize that
23:49 pdurbin It takes discipline to not distract others with these tools either.
23:50 pdurbin bear: the young folk get distract and distract each other?
23:50 pdurbin get distracted*
23:51 bear yea, they tend to devolve into glyph wars or bike shedding
23:53 pdurbin So here's my question... are things better or worse in public? On a public mailing list with web archives or a chat room that has public online logs? Versus some internal list or chat inside a company's firewall?
23:53 bear better in public - it's the knowledge that others outside of the "family" can see
23:54 pdurbin At least if Google and other search engines can index everything, you can find it again, link to it.
23:54 pdurbin bear: right. the family is on better behavior in church or whatever :)
23:55 pdurbin "We live in a world of infinitely searchable micro-content, and every contribution, however small, enriches all of us." http://blog.codinghorror.com/when-in-doubt-make-it-public/
23:55 bear yea, I feel the same about default-public
