Docker container is basically a regular linux process, so the performance hit should be close to zero |

Guest60826: Every time you run a container is creates a new layer with the changes and thus a new image ID. Those changes are persisted in that new image layer... If you want to persist data OUTSIDE of the container, you use mounted volumes. |

how can docker and kubernetes be used to have high available solution? |
17:38 |
|
D-Spair |
I guess the easiest thing to explain when to use Docker IMHO is that if you are using VMs for application isolation, Docker is a much better solution with lower overhead and is more portable. |
17:38 |
|
D-Spair |
Abhijith: Kubernetes can define a minimum number of running instances and if one dies it will automatically provision and launch a new instance. |

Oh, and another thing to keep in mind is the storage system. When you run Docker on ext4/ext3/JFS/XFS/etc.... it uses a virtual filesystem called "AUFS". This filesystem has locking and layering issues which can cause issues. If you use BTRFS or a logical volume as the storage backend for Docker, you will not have those limitations. |
17:43 |
|
Guest60826 |
D-Spair : You mean lets if i run a database from mysql image. Where mysql is going to save the files. So that if I run the container again , i should not lost the data |

What happens to the data when the container is killed? Is it also removed? |
17:45 |
|
D-Spair |
Guest60826: No... When you run the container Docker creates a NEW container layer which is not named and has a new hash code, so if you try to run the container with the original name, you will NOT get the changes restored. There is an option to tell docker to migrate the name on container shutdown to the updated layer. |

Guest60826: aparna: When you stop the container, the runtime image is stored as a new layer with a new hashcode/name... If you start that the original container with the original name, your changes will NOT be present. You could start the image which was created by your original run, but that takes some more work. |

Guest60826: In the Dockerfile, you define a "VOLUME /mount/path" and when you run the container: docker run -v /external/path:/internal/path container |

That will expose the external directory to the container at the mount point specified |
