17:14 shelajev pm771, it is, check out http://virtualjug.com/#live
17:15 D-Spair mjremijan:  Well, some people do that. The real positive outcome of Docker is that you don't need VMs for application isolation.
17:15 TaivoKasper Docker container is basically a regular linux process, so the performance hit should be close to zero
17:15 pm771 I found it. Thx
17:15 shelajev but that's on linux only
17:15 shelajev so you just get the guest VM out of the box with boot2docker
17:15 pathfinder so I can package a database as part of my application in docker?
17:15 cesarHGt @pathfinder. Yes.
17:16 D-Spair shelajev:  Yes, but for production you would probably NOT want to deploy contains to a VM on top of Windows.

17:19 D-Spair As such, we are required to run containers which are all built from scratch instead of using existing container layers.

17:20 thermaljahero D-Spair: Will do. Will execute some regouruos testing. But this looks very interesting to implement within the development team...
17:20 pdurbin D-Spair: overall do you like and recommend Docker?
17:20 shelajev good point, maybe Arun can say something about debugging the containers? any tips or something
17:20 D-Spair There are also limitations with how you do networking inside of Docker, but those problems are being addressed by tools like Kubernetes/Weave/etc...
17:20 TaivoKasper Is he going to also speak about the security of the images? How do I know that my base image is not malicious?
17:20 xhac joined #virtualJUG
17:21 sjmaple you can use private repositories for trust reasons
17:21 D-Spair pdurbin:  I LOVE Docker in my dev environments ... I HATE Docker in our prod environment because of the limitations we are having...

17:22 shelajev I don't even know if they released anything after forking Docker
17:22 D-Spair cesarHGt:  We have a script which installs it.
17:23 TaivoKasper Should I for security reasons always use a base image provided by docker?
17:23 thermaljahero D-Spair: how do you handle load balancing on docker on production?

17:29 pdurbin D-Spair: you love Docker in dev and hate it in prod. got it :)
17:30 DOCKALOTTALER DOCK IT ALL!
17:30 tonygv joined #virtualJUG
17:30 D-Spair Guest60826:  Every time you run a container is creates a new layer with the changes and thus a new image ID. Those changes are persisted in that new image layer... If you want to persist data OUTSIDE of the container, you use mounted volumes.
17:31 thermaljahero D-Spair: Thanks...
17:31 DijitalMunky joined #virtualJUG
17:31 D-Spair Guest60826:  So, in our team, we mount a "/data" directory and direct all persistent data to that directory.
17:31 sjmaple DOCK ALL THE THINGS!
17:32 thermaljahero D-Spair: we have a small Play Framework project, right now, I think docker is not a good recipe YET for Play... Agree?
17:32 DOCKALOTTALER Who maintains the best CentOS 6 base image?
17:32 D-Spair thermaljahero:  I imagine that it's not a problem...
17:34 D-Spair Some more issues we have had running it in production: Running your own internal Docker Hub repository is problematic. Rebuilding containers is time consuming.

17:37 thermaljahero D-Spair: hm, I couldn't agree yet until I get to that experience. Hopefully very soon...:)
17:38 Abhijith how can docker and kubernetes be used to have high available solution?
17:38 D-Spair I guess the easiest thing to explain when to use Docker IMHO is that if you are using VMs for application isolation, Docker is a much better solution with lower overhead and is more portable.
17:38 D-Spair Abhijith:  Kubernetes can define a minimum number of running instances and if one dies it will automatically provision and launch a new instance.
17:38 pfrobinson joined #virtualJUG
17:39 shelajev Can I run kubernetes inside a docker container?
17:39 D-Spair shelajev:  The master CAN be run inside of a container...
17:40 ksobkowiak joined #virtualJUG
17:43 D-Spair Oh, and another thing to keep in mind is the storage system. When you run Docker on ext4/ext3/JFS/XFS/etc.... it uses a virtual filesystem called "AUFS". This filesystem has locking and layering issues which can cause issues. If you use BTRFS or a logical volume as the storage backend for Docker, you will not have those limitations.
17:43 Guest60826 D-Spair : You mean lets if i run a database from mysql image. Where mysql is going to save the files. So that if I run the container again , i should not lost the data
17:44 besolov joined #virtualJUG
17:44 pfrobinson joined #virtualJUG
17:45 aparna What happens to the data when the container is killed? Is it also removed?
17:45 D-Spair Guest60826:  No... When you run the container Docker creates a NEW container layer which is not named and has a new hash code, so if you try to run the container with the original name, you will NOT get the changes restored. There is an option to tell docker to migrate the name on container shutdown to the updated layer.
17:45 Guest60826 yes , i also have the same question

17:47 D-Spair Guest60826:  aparna: When you stop the container, the runtime image is stored as a new layer with a new hashcode/name... If you start that the original container with the original name, your changes will NOT be present. You could start the image which was created by your original run, but that takes some more work.
17:48 D-Spair The idomatic way to keep persistent data is to use volumes mounted to the container..

17:51 Guest60826 ?
17:51 Simas joined #virtualJUG
17:51 prinstonsam joined #virtualJUG
17:52 D-Spair Guest60826:  In the Dockerfile, you define a "VOLUME /mount/path" and when you run the container: docker run -v /external/path:/internal/path container
17:52 D-Spair That will expose the external directory to the container at the mount point specified
17:54 sjmaple wow, D-Spair has done an amazing job answering questions today! :)

18:00 sjmaple any questions for Arun to finish up?
18:00 D-Spair Containerception!
18:00 Abhijith On one hand this setup is brining portability and easy creation of VM (scalability)
18:01 Abhijith aren't we more capable with Puppet, Jenkins, VMWare?
18:01 Abhijith Docker is certainly helpful for development
18:02 D-Spair Abhijith:  VMware has a noticeable resource cost. Docker's overhead is SIGNIFICANTLY lower.
18:02 Abhijith I was coming to that D-Spair
18:02 Abhijith Docker is certainly great
18:02 Timmo How does docker/kubernetes handle different architecture ? can we execute containers on ARM processors ?
18:02 Abhijith but kubernetes impressive but I do not see adaptation soon
18:02 D-Spair Timmo:  I have run Docker containers on ARM7HF, but you have to ensure that you use packages which are architecture appropriate

18:04 D-Spair SoundsOfSilence:  Excellent question, and the answer is that you have to roll your own..

18:07 usfch how can i know how much ressources ()
18:08 D-Spair usfch:  There's no lower or upper limit...
18:08 D-Spair usfch:  By default, whatever resources your host system has can be used by the containers and there is almost no additional overhead created by Docker.
18:09 D-Spair usfch:  So, in a sense, it no different than running the application without the container.
18:09 usfch alright, thanks D-Spair
