17:11 sjmaple The London JUG?
17:11 DSpair One problem I have found with Scala is the proliferation of disjointed DSLs which create a walled garden within teams... How does one prevent those sorts of divergences?
17:11 CarlJokl Now I am thinking of Kotlin and the REPL discussion
17:11 sjmaple Wasn't that Ceylon?
17:11 CarlJokl Maybe it was Ceylon
17:11 DSpair Ceylon doesn't have a REPL..
17:11 CarlJokl Ah it was Ceylon then
17:12 sjmaple yeh, Gavin said there's no need :)
17:12 HarmeetSingh they all are JVM based languages
17:12 DSpair sjmaple:I have to agree with Gavin...
17:12 CarlJokl Just don't tell Dick
17:12 HarmeetSingh so, why java developer go to other languages?
17:13 Russel java.uti.Date is banned isn;t it? ;-)
17:14 Russel JDK7 should be banned as well ;-)
17:14 HarmeetSingh no, that's not true
17:14 djm000 joined #virtualJUG
17:14 Russel Groovy has GroovyConsole.
17:15 DSpair FYI, I implemented the Sieve of Eratosthenes in Ceylon with the help of Gavin and Tako from the Ceylon user's list.
17:15 DSpair https://gist.github.com/InfoSec812/b7f65111ef1503fe132a
17:16 Russel IPython notebooks are way better than REPLs

17:16 sjmaple :D
17:17 sjmaple johnament: yeh, it did that ages ago - like 6 mths or more :)
17:17 Russel Java programmers should use final all the time.
17:17 johnament sjmaple: i never make it on to IRC
17:17 besolov joined #virtualJUG
17:17 sjmaple do you watch on YT or virtualjug.com?
17:17 johnament youtube, but i usually project
17:17 DSpair Welcome John!
17:18 johnament DSpair: hi!
17:18 johnament do we know each other from somewhere else? name's not familiar :-(
17:18 DSpair Are we going to see a vJUG session on DeltaSpike soon?
17:18 DSpair johnament:From the DeltaSpike mailing list..
17:18 sjmaple ahh ok - the embedded virtualjug.com doesn't give you a choice on IRC channel
17:19 johnament DSpair: oh ok great! :-0
17:19 johnament Depends on if sjmaple thinks there would be interest on a CDI/DS type talk...
17:19 HarmeetSingh is scala use Java collections apis ?
17:19 johnament HarmeetSingh: I believe they have their own wrappers to do conversion
17:20 johnament HarmeetSingh: http://docs.scala-lang.org/overviews/core/architecture-of-scala-collections.html
17:20 sjmaple send me an abstract johnament!
17:20 sjmaple simon@zeroturnaround dot com
17:20 DSpair I would definitely be interested in a CDI/DS talk..
17:20 HarmeetSingh scala have primitive collections support/
17:20 HarmeetSingh ?
17:21 theotown Does anyone here believe that knowing more about Scala will help them get a better job? (a bit off topic, but hey)
17:21 CarlJokl I am not sure if some of that is hidden behind the scenes
17:21 theotown i.e. as a Java dev
17:21 johnament I wanna say that scala doesn't differentiate int vs Integer the way Java does
17:21 CarlJokl so working with stuff like val byteArray: Array[Byte]
17:22 DSpair theotown:All knowledge helps with getting new/better jobs..
17:22 johnament so no primitive wrappers
17:22 DSpair theotown:Even if you just learn that a tool is not a tool which should be used..
17:22 CarlJokl I think Scala takes care of whether it uses primitives or wrappers behind the scenes but Dick will have a better idea of that
17:23 johnament dinner? it's lunch time here..
17:23 theotown DSpair: agreed. Is only familiarity enough, or is actual coding experience expected nowadays?
17:23 DTTeam joined #virtualJUG
17:24 CarlJokl I have been programming Scala over a year but still not a Scala Ninja yet
17:24 johnament theotown: at least in my area, the only JVM language other than java that pops up is groovy
17:24 DSpair theotown:That would depend on the tool and the target environment...
17:24 HarmeetSingh good question, simon
17:28 NTR joined #virtualJUG
17:31 CarlJokl One of the nice benefits of Scala variables vs function definitions means that even if the member becomes a function later instead of a variable code doesn't break
17:31 gamsd joined #virtualJUG
17:33 Grundlefleck joined #virtualJUG
17:35 Russel I think we are seeing proof that REPLs are a problem! One line at a time really isnt as good as using some form of editor.
17:35 theotown @CarlJokl - would a 1-year Java dev feel like a ninja? ;-)
17:35 Wes joined #virtualJUG
17:36 sjmaple what it might be nice to do is develop in an IDE and then select a block of code, right click, run in REPL :)
17:37 CarlJokl @theotown Probably Not. There is an awful lot of dark magic that goes on behind the scenes in Scala that I don't yet understand.
17:37 Russel IDE are usually just too heavyweight. Lightweight editor with an inferior mode for executing in a running engine. Oh you have to love Emacs.
17:38 CarlJokl @theotown One reason for me getting into Scala is not technical. Java developers are fairly commodity these days. Scala developers are still more rare and as such can be higher value.
17:39 KPilking joined #virtualJUG
17:41 joshuaw1 how do you remove things from repl like removing an Import that you no longer want

18:02 iipaul an advanced session would be great as a java developer transitioning to scala
18:02 CarlJokl *waves*
18:02 DSpair One problem I have found with Scala is the proliferation of disjointed DSLs which create a walled garden within teams... How does one prevent those sorts of divergences?
18:03 Russel No checked exceptions, yay, just like Groovy :-)
18:03 milovtim What about Closable in try/catch?
18:04 Russel Sounds a bit like Ceylon union types.
18:06 Russel Isn't this called "Execute Around"?
18:07 CarlJokl I need to sneak off to Skills Matter. I am still listening but will closing the IRC which is on my desktop.

18:18 sjmaple yeh, it helps learning with people and having people to ask
18:19 Russel Lifelong learning is essential.
18:21 CarlJokl I want to go on Dock Walls course when I am in a possition to. It would help with the advanced topics
18:22 sjmaple Here's the group Dick mentioned https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/scala-user
18:23 Russel Scala user is way better than it used to be.
