17:10 HarmeetSingh that's great, simon
17:11 pioneer hi! CommonJS != Require.js, which one is actually used?
17:13 HarmeetSingh ceylon use jvm #nashorn java script engine ?
17:13 besolov_ joined #virtualJUG
17:16 carljokl It seems like adding  refied generics for Java doesn't get talked about now.
17:17 Abhijith joined #virtualJUG
17:18 JustinR @carljokl Brian Goetz is fond of saying that no one can give him a satisfactory reason why reified generics are necessary...
17:20 cafrjbr joined #virtualJUG
17:21 Quintesse pioneer: I'm no expert but I think it's the adjusted CommonJS format proposed by Require.js so they work both on Node.js and with Require.js
17:21 Gurkenmaster joined #virtualJUG
17:22 carljokl This does seem somewhat  like Scala case
17:22 HarmeetSingh in the sample, he check string instance of File and URI, is it possible ?
17:23 besolov joined #virtualJUG
17:23 Quintesse HarmeetSingh: there's an issue open for runnin on nashorn https://github.com/ceylon/ceylon-js/issues/316
17:23 HarmeetSingh for javascript which engine the ceylong use ?
17:24 Gurkenmaster loading ceylon in the javafx webview freezes the window for a few seconds :(
17:24 Gurkenmaster HarmeetSingh: ceylon works with any javascript engine
17:26 HarmeetSingh we together do the programming with cyeylon and javascript?

17:30 sjmaple I love union typing in Ceylon :)
17:30 sjmaple it's controlled dynamic typing :)
17:34 millrossjez minor correction: isn't it type inference rather than dynamic typing (compile vs run time?) It's gorgeous regardless of terminology though
17:36 besolov joined #virtualJUG
17:36 sjmaple yeh, that's true :)
17:39 sjmaple who's for a C# struct? :)
17:39 Abhijith I am for the struct ..
17:40 Abhijith Tuple is indeed more bigger feature than union typing from my view
17:40 sjmaple I used to use them a lot in my C++ days, very useful
17:40 millrossjez I'd sell my grandma for tuples in Java :)
17:41 sjmaple haha
17:44 Abhijith I do not really miss Tupels in java... I would be happy to use javatuples library.. would be nice to have this included in the core library itself
17:45 sjmaple nice idea - you should create a JEP
17:47 carljokl joined #virtualJUG
17:48 theotown question time!
17:48 sjmaple questions please!
17:49 JustinR Can Ceylon throw Exceptions or should it be part of the tuple(?) return type?
17:49 DSpair Does Ceylon eliminate checked exceptions?
17:49 Gurkenmaster you can throw exceptions but they are unchecked
17:49 carljokl How well does it interoperate with Java?
17:51 Abhijith How does Ceylon perform compared to java? I know it is a big topic of discussion, but very briefly if possible
17:51 DSpair How does the performance compare to Scala/Clojure/Node?
17:52 DSpair Does Ceylon have a REPL available?
17:52 sjmaple Abhijith: can you be more specific?
17:54 pioneer What are your plans regarding Javascript VM? Do you plan to have your own idiomatic frontend framework like Angular, or maybe, instead, to have better integrations/wrappers around existing Javascript libraries?
17:57 Abhijith Before I could type in my question, Gavin briefly answered my question... I would now try with micro micro micro micro micro benchmarks :-)
17:58 DSpair BeanShell SUCKS
17:58 Abhijith Hope I could find some tool which would find the difference in 10 power -30 accuracy :)
17:58 Gurkenmaster you can take a look at the "code" by using a java decompiler
17:59 Quintesse DSpair: we don't have a REPL but you can use Ceylon online for rapid tests http://try.ceylon-lang.org/
18:01 Quintesse Btw, we have our own channel #ceylonlang
18:01 Quintesse http://www.ceylon-lang.org/documentation/current
18:02 Quintesse The tour mentioned by Gavin : http://www.ceylon-lang.org/documentation/1.1/tour/
18:05 sjmaple Here's the replay http://virtualjug.com/ceylon-for-java-developers/
18:05 gavinking thanks everyone!
18:05 sjmaple really really great session - thanks gavinking!
18:05 gavinking if you have more questions, we'll see you on #ceylonlang!
18:05 gavinking thank you for setting it up sjmaple!

18:48 lucaswerkmeister Gurkenmaster: no need to use a decompiler to look at the code the Ceylon compiler produces; you can compile with `--verbose=code` (from the CLI) to see it directly :)
19:06 madman333 left #virtualJUG
19:48 sjmaple lucaswerkmeister: so an integrated decompiler :)
19:49 joshuaw1 joined #virtualJUG
19:49 lucaswerkmeister sjmaple: well no, it simply prints out what it’s going to pass to javac
19:49 lucaswerkmeister it generates a javac ast and then passes that to javac to generate the bytecode
19:49 lucaswerkmeister and this simply prints that ast (not sure if the pretty-printing is included in javac or if the backend guys added that)
19:50 lucaswerkmeister (also, it’s not quite java: all names are fully qualified with leading `.`, and there are let expressions (compiler-internal))
20:15 sjmaple oh, I see, I thought you meant it takes the compiles artifacts and shows you source... showing source from source is less impressive :)
