What do people think about Matrix? https://matrix.org |

I don't have much experience with it but I keep hearing that people are using it. |

pdurbin: fwiw I've never heard of it until now - I'm trying to figure out what it is meant to replace (Slack/Irc/Mastodon/etc?) seems pretty polished and such though. |

I'm used to the home base of a chat service to be IRC, Gitter, Slack, or whatever. Public Lab seems to consider Matrix as their home base. Check this out: https://github.com/publiclab/plots2/issues/2590 |

Ok, I guess I'm able to avoid learning about Matrix because I can just use an OFTC IRC channel from weechat. Phew. ;) |

the issue that you saw with publiclab is very indicative of a community using gateway tools but not tuning / customizing them - you get artifacts from the various services that the messages cross |

Sure, but I'm probably the only person who would think to connect via Gitter but not using any native Gitter interface. I have weechat configured to use the Gitter IRC gateway. |

So I probably deserved the poor user experience I got. |

I do think about adopting some of these "gateway tools", as you call them, from time to time. In the end I always seem to be fine with the lowest common denominator, which is IRC. |

I do the same, slack, gitter and others are all connected via IRC for me |

part of the pain of using gateway tools I know because I keep trying to connect the various services to XMPP and end up having to deal with so many cross-service glitches I just stop and go back to IRC because it is basically text |

If Slack has been quite for you lately, it's because they killed their IRC and XMPP gateways. :) |

yea, I got the banner on the various slack's I connected to with IRC |

So how do you connect to Slack now? |

there is a wechat plugin that uses the slack's web api -- I'm thinking about switching to that |

for work's slack I just loaded the desktop app - and i'm enduring the crapload of memory it consumes |

Interesting (since I use weechat). Yeah, I'm just using the Slack desktop app at work. |

Are you still grumpy about Go? :) |

a little, it doesn't really bother me because I'm not trying to do complicated things in it |

I still feel like I don't have a favorite stack for whipping together a webapp. :/ |
