21:25 codex pdurbin: About "Maybe instead of IRC I should try to find a system where public logs are the default, the norm, the expectation." -- I don't think the system matters. For example, with twitter, I have 2 profiles. A private one, and a public one. Everything that goes public is thought through, evaluated, and ~1/3rd of the thins I want to blindly reply to with thoughts are never submited. The private one on some other level gets a bit more unfiltered. Why
21:26 codex The main point, to me public is not the same as logged. I am perfectly fine going into a common place and yelling "y'all suck" ...not so much if someone records it, tags with with #sourcefu, and then puts it on google/youtube/instagram/facebook/etc
21:26 codex ^ just an example, but hopefully the point comes accross
21:27 codex irrelevant of the medium, the problem of privacy stands. (And more so, privacy vs public vs public+archived vs public+indexed+archived+randomly-selected)
21:29 codex facebook is another good example probably -- people tend to share things that you are clearly ok with making "public", but the definition of public is funky...to some public is a close group of friends. To others it's co-workers. To others it's everyone
21:29 * codex -> done
23:18 pdurbin codex: sure, Twitter is a good example of a system where by default everything is public. It's the norm. People are having fun digging up tweets from Donald Trump from years ago. Like you, I'm careful about what I tweet.
23:20 pdurbin I mean, this conversation is already interesting. I'm glad it's being logged. I can link back to it some day, reference it.
23:21 * pdurbin tosses philbot a treat
23:26 pdurbin I stopped by an event at Harvard today that was being videotaped. There were signs on the door that basically said that you might end up in a video on the Internet. It was the CS50 Fair: https://www.facebook.com/events/2073928902829806/
23:27 pdurbin I'm not sure what my point is, though. :)
23:33 pdurbin I can imagine people seeing that sign and saying, "Forget this. I'm not stepping foot in here because it's being recorded and photos are being taken and put on the Internet." That's fine. I'm not going to judge them. But I went in anyway.
23:44 pdurbin The word "public" is a little fraught, I guess. The Internet adds a new dimension. The Internet never forgets. There's a reason why some people are fighting for "the right to be forgotten".
