dotplus: sorry, you don't think what's necessary? |

pdurbin: that you should leave IRC, that would be a shame! perhaps I misunderstood "should try to find a system where public logs are the default" |

Oh, you won't be rid of me so easily. :) |

But do you see what I mean? Logging IRC channels publicly is embraced by what percentage of people who use IRC? 5%? 10%? I'm sure I'm in the minority. Most people want it to be like Snapchat, I think. Gone and mostly forgotten after a while. The internet never forgets. |

Actually I wouldn't be too surprised if that figure were significantly higher. at least for (freenode/perl.org) channels that are for open source projects and the like (yes, I realise IRC is (was?) for _far_ more than just those kinds of communitities, but not for _me_!). I'm sure it is a minority and it might be low, but it's not so low that it's a surprise to find a channel is logged/published. |

Let's start a new IRC network where public logging is the norm. It can run Eris. :) |

uh yeah. cos starting & getting traction for new communities is such minimal effort that we'll have plenty of spare cycles to devote to it:) |

Heh. I wonder what percentage of freenode channels are logged publicly. I'm guessing a low number. 5% or whatever. |

I mean, I stood up Eris on my Digital Ocean VM but would anyone here bother to join my new IRC network? If so, I'd probably hack on philbot (Perl, sivoais) to log multiple IRC servers/networks: https://github.com/pdurbin/philbot/issues/3 |

Yeah I will! |

wasn't there an attempt by some folks to go around freenode and offer free Web-hosted logging to various project channels? |

it might have been this <https://botbot.me/> |

I don't know that I would say botbot is going around freenode. It's certainly a very popular service and I link to them from my list of free IRC logging services: http://wiki.greptilian.com/irc/logging |
