re Slack; yeah the UI is noisey and you really don't actually benefit from all the fanciness per se |
02:23 |
|
prologic |
and yes their privacy policy is somewhat questionable |
02:24 |
|
prologic |
I personally don't actually see a lot of value addedd of Slack's offerings vs. say IRCCloud |

The animated gifs are often annoying. Get off my lawn. :) |
02:27 |
|
prologic |
lol |
02:27 |
|
prologic |
see :P |
02:27 |
|
prologic |
nah but in all seriousness IRC + Multimedia is actually fine |
02:28 |
|
prologic |
my wife and I share photots between each other over our IRC network and over our own upload service |

Slack does help me feel a little more connected the people outside by group, at least. The good old #random channel. |
02:28 |
|

I don't mind an IRC client that dispalys images inline when turned on with an option to make it go away onc eyou've seen it |
02:28 |
|
prologic |
Textual does this |
02:29 |
|
prologic |
does it though? |
02:29 |
|
pdurbin |
Yeah, and in Slack you can click an arrow to hide the gif, which I do a lot. |
02:29 |
|
prologic |
I mean does it really? |
02:29 |
|
prologic |
Or is it really just a reinvention of IRC |
02:31 |
|
pdurbin |
Well, all the groups weren't on a common chat platform. Some were using Gtalk, some HipChat, some XMPP. I guess we all got on Slack. I dunno. |
02:32 |
|
pdurbin |
If I'm going to look at images in IRC, I guess I'd need to upgrade from a completely text-based client (weechat). |
02:36 |
|
prologic |
well not really |
02:36 |
|
prologic |
just click the link :) |
02:36 |
|
prologic |
you do have a web browser right? :) |
02:39 |
|
pdurbin |
Oh. A link to the image in IRC. In Slack the image is just right there in front of you. |
02:43 |
|
prologic |
ahahaha |
02:43 |
|
prologic |
tthat's what's nice about Textual I guess |
02:43 |
|
prologic |
I haven't used Slack in so long it's actually not fair for me to compare |
02:44 |
|
prologic |
but yeah you ge the link and an inline display you can click away/close and then you're just left with the link |
02:44 |

dotplus: in terms of research groups, http://haystack.csail.mit.edu looks into "social computing". Their Murmur project looked kind of interesting. |
02:45 |
|
pdurbin |
prologic: I guess that sounds fine. I sometimes use https://imgur.com to share an image in IRC as a link. |
02:45 |
|
prologic |
*nods* |
02:46 |
|
pdurbin |
http://people.csail.mit.edu/axz/ in particular is working on "designing and building systems to improve discourse, collaboration, and understanding on the web" |
02:50 |
|
pdurbin |
prologic: so how's cadmus coming? |
02:53 |
|
pdurbin |
ah, it says "coming soon" at https://github.com/prologic/eris |
02:53 |
|
prologic |
I'm going to finish refactoring some SASL stuff with eris first |
02:53 |
|
prologic |
then I'll get started on that |
02:53 |
|
prologic |
indeed :) |
02:54 |
|
pdurbin |
no rush, I think I need to upgrade my server before I can run eris anyway. I'm still on Ubuntu 14.04. |
02:54 |
|
pdurbin |
I suppose that means that my little Go app works fine on Go 1.2, which is somewhat comforting to me. :) |
02:58 |
|
prologic |
nope |
02:58 |
|
prologic |
no upgrade required |
02:58 |
|
prologic |
you can just run the binary as-is |
02:58 |
|
prologic |
much of the approach and supported "norm" of most (if not all?) Go written apps/daemons/whatever is to statically link the binaries |
02:58 |
|
prologic |
so they are otherwise fraily portable |
02:58 |
|
prologic |
your userland/userspace is NOT requried :) |
02:59 |
|
prologic |
in fact I actualyl construct my docker images with no userspace/userland just the binary |
03:07 |
|
pdurbin |
I don't see any binaries at https://github.com/prologic/eris/releases |
03:07 |
|
pdurbin |
But don't worry about it. I'm going to bed. |
03:20 |
|
prologic |
Yeah I’ll make sure to start including some in every released tag |
