02:52 pdurbin I'm thinking about "There Is No Open Source Community" by John Mark Walker: http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2006/01/12/no_oss_community.html
02:53 pdurbin I read it a few weeks ago and read it again today.
02:53 pdurbin This tweet kicked things off a few weeks ago: "Open source is better without the vendor politics. The foundation of this movement is code, collaboration, and community; not capitalism." https://twitter.com/kelseyhightower/status/923189848630022146
02:54 pdurbin Then John Mark replied with two tweets:
02:54 pdurbin "The defining moment of my career was when I realized open source was never a movement. This realization led to a long bout with depression" https://twitter.com/johnmark/status/923243336714145792
02:54 pdurbin "It was the realization of economic trends, shoehorned into a framework created by free software ideologues http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2006/01/12/no_oss_community.html " https://twitter.com/johnmark/status/923244025875968000
02:55 pdurbin I don't agree with everything in the article but a lot of it rings true.
02:56 pdurbin I like this quote: "The view that there is a core group of altruistic companies and true believers driving open source forward is simply false."
02:58 pdurbin "Open source conventional wisdom tells a tale of good versus evil, David versus Goliath"
03:00 pdurbin "Looking at open source from an economic perspective, it becomes clear that Linux or its equivalent was bound to happen eventually"
03:05 pdurbin Maybe I should start a reading group.
03:06 pdurbin Even after a second reading I still can't decide what I think.
03:07 pdurbin It's sort of a click bait title: "there is no open source community"
03:07 pdurbin But what if people like me stop caring about open source?
03:08 pdurbin We all stop caring but it doesn't matter? Economic trends mean that open source will continue to grow?
03:09 pdurbin Open source isn't really a movement? If you want a movement, you should join the free software movement?
03:11 pdurbin I will say that I've been thinking lately about how I'm pretty into open source but I don't know a lot of people personally who are into open source. It's not like I get together with people every month or whatever and talk open source because we all love it so much. If people like that are nearby, I don't know them.
03:12 pdurbin I've started looking a bit for groups like this near me.
