pdurbin: afaik, OpenJDK doesn't include support for JavaFX, there's a separate OpenJFX project; I don't have it in Gentoo so I don't know if it works |
02:48 |
|
pdurbin |
aditsu: does that mean your app doesn't run on Gentoo? |
02:49 |
|
aditsu |
pdurbin: it runs, with the Oracle JDK |
02:49 |
|
pdurbin |
Ok. I only use openjdk on linux. |
02:50 |
|
aditsu |
pdurbin: if you have OpenJFX, it should probably work too |
02:52 |
|
pdurbin |
ok, I'm installing openjfx |
02:54 |
|
pdurbin |
aditsu: you're right, it seems to run fine |
02:56 |
|
aditsu |
awesome :) |
02:56 |
|
pdurbin |
aditsu: the about menu is blank |
02:57 |
|
pdurbin |
oh wait, now there's a cat. weird |
02:57 |
|
aditsu |
you mean the window? no text? |
02:57 |
|
pdurbin |
yeah, the window. it's fine now |
02:57 |
|
aditsu |
ok, that's my cat Toto |
02:57 |
|
pdurbin |
ah, looks like my cat Panther |
02:58 |
|
aditsu |
how many cats do you have? I have 4 |
02:59 |
|
pdurbin |
wow, you're a cat lady. we also have Pather's brother, Tiger |
03:03 |
|
aditsu |
4 is not really cat lady level :) |
03:05 |
|
pdurbin |
I dunno. My thought process is... lady with a cat, lady with two cats, cat lady. ;) |
03:06 |
|
pdurbin |
It only takes three to make a cat lady. |
03:12 |
|
pdurbin |
aditsu: what's your thought process on whether to open source this thing or not? |
03:13 |
|
aditsu |
pdurbin: basically.. "what do I get out of it?" - I am considering releasing it for a price, depending on the license |
03:13 |
|
aditsu |
for reference: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/selling.en.html |
03:17 |
|
pdurbin |
yeah, "what do I get out of it?" is a good consideration |
03:17 |
|
pdurbin |
I think the main thing I get is feedback on my code. I learn something. |
03:22 |
|
aditsu |
feedback on the features or the actual source code? |
03:23 |
|
pdurbin |
the actual source code |
03:24 |
|
pdurbin |
I've only been programming professionally for a few years. I'm still learning a lot. |
03:30 |
|
aditsu |
I have hardly received any feedback on the source code of my open-source projects |
03:32 |
|
pdurbin |
Have you received much feedback on features? |
03:33 |
|
aditsu |
yes |
03:33 |
|
pdurbin |
How many contributors do you have on your open source projects? |
03:35 |
|
aditsu |
some are solo projects, some have a few other contributors |
03:35 |
|
aditsu |
are you talking about feedback from other contributors? |
03:35 |
|
pdurbin |
yeah, I guess I'm thinking about code review from a team |
03:36 |
|
aditsu |
I had that a lot more in a work environment |
03:37 |
|
aditsu |
actually one open-source project I was involved in was developed for work |
03:37 |
|
pdurbin |
At work it took us a while to get to regular code reviews but I like it. |
03:39 |
|
aditsu |
hmm, I can't seem to find it.. |
03:40 |
|
pdurbin |
I get basically zero feedback on the code of my personal open source projects. |
03:40 |
|
pdurbin |
Sometimes I ping people in this channel and they take a look for me. :) |
03:44 |
|
aditsu |
ah, found it! https://github.com/imo/SleekXMPP |
03:45 |
|
pdurbin |
bear: XMPP ^^ |
03:46 |
|
bear |
hi |
03:46 |
|
bear |
SleekXMPP was written by two friends and I'm now the maintainer - but it's old now compared to other python xmpp libs |
03:47 |
|
aditsu |
don't know why it's not showing at all in my activity.. |
03:47 |
|
aditsu |
bear: oh really? |
03:47 |
|
bear |
yes, that github url is not the official one |
03:48 |
|
aditsu |
it's a fork I worked on |
03:48 |
|
bear |
ah |
03:48 |
|
pdurbin |
small world |
03:49 |
|
bear |
https://dev.louiz.org/projects/slixmpp |
03:49 |
|
bear |
because SleekXMPP for a while was not actively worked on by the author, the Slixmpp folks forked it and started making fixes |
03:49 |
|
aditsu |
I see a bear at https://github.com/fritzy/SleekXMPP :) |
03:49 |
|
bear |
I backport any security items they find and maintain SleekXMPP only because the book references it |
03:50 |
|
bear |
yea |
03:50 |
|
aditsu |
that fork makes the whole thing asynchronous, using greenlets, if you're interested |
03:51 |
|
bear |
nice |
03:51 |
|
aditsu |
but it's not being used anymore |
03:52 |
|
bear |
yea, I am not active with the XMPP world anymore - I still watch and help, but not like I used to |
03:53 |
|
pdurbin |
bear: oh, I thought you were still in deep. |
03:53 |
|
bear |
well, still active in the community but not using it for dayjob |
03:54 |
|
pdurbin |
gotcha |
03:54 |
|
bear |
at &yet I was working with it daily |
03:54 |
|
pdurbin |
everyone have moved to slack :/ |
03:54 |
|
bear |
here at CircleCI I rarely use it - but still code personal projects with it |
03:54 |
|
bear |
yea :/ |
03:55 |
|
aditsu |
I don't really like the bloated xml nature of xmpp, but I like the general idea (such as the openness, flexibility and interoperability) |
21:26 |
|
pdurbin |
I just got this: https://stackoverflow.com/help/privileges/close-questions |
21:26 |
|
pdurbin |
so look out |
21:26 |
|
pdurbin |
;) |
