12:58 sivoais I saw that unpublishing story. To me, it seemed like an overreaction.
12:59 sivoais It would have been better to provide a deprecation path for that one module that alerted people of a name change months down the road.
13:22 dotplus I've had 0 contact with using node/npm as a dev and have only dealt with providing it (deploying/automating the deploy of a node-thing), but it looks at first glance like npm failed to learn anything from the extensive history of packaging. Fortunately there are now some attempts to cope: nodebrew, nodeenv and nodenv (yes, those latter 2 are different) so the most interesting technical point in that story is a reference in a comment to ...
13:22 dotplus ... https://github.com/whyrusleeping/gx which sounds like (basic?) tooling to store your packages in http://ipfs.io
13:24 dotplus perhaps I have a more crimsonfu perspective than sourcefu.
13:26 dotplus I wonder (idly, without investigating) how/whether they're dealing with the problems of metadata and search/discoverability, but it certainly appears that could be valuable (assuming that ipfs gets/maintains enough interest to be reliable/available in the medium/long/verylong terms)
13:56 pdurbin dotplus: well, they've learned some lessons, I think :)
14:00 dotplus ok, s/anything/much/
14:00 dotplus or perhaps "enough not to be embarassing"?
14:03 pdurbin this is telling: Laurie Voss on Twitter: "Un-un-publishing is an unprecedented action that we're taking given the severity and widespread nature of breakage, and isn't done lightly." - https://twitter.com/seldo/status/712414588281552900
