12:51 timdiels For a read-only API, is there any downside to bundling /genes/families, /genes/domains into /genes?include=families&include=domains ?
12:56 mdk timdiels: For a read-only API why not just dropping files and directories behind an HTTP server and enable directory listing?
13:14 timdiels mdk: I suppose to avoid having to download whole files when you just want info on a few genes. So the API should be designed for querying bits of info, for bulk retrieval ftp should be provided
13:15 mdk looks like I'm not aware enough about the genes structures
13:17 timdiels Well, we're not sure how people would use this API. But your comment made me realise that the API should be designed for more fine grained querying. Other bioinformatics projects tend to have a similar design where data is offered in bulk as ftp and fine grained queries can be done via an API
13:26 timdiels In our case each gene has a name, roughly 10 attributes, have roughly 0-30 GO terms (think of them as tags), tends to be part of <10 gene families (groups) and is annotated with 0-10 interpro domains (~tags)
13:28 timdiels I'm guessing that would be a couple of GB to download, hence an API
13:28 timdiels also may be because the boss thought it'd be cool to have an API ;)
