20:09 Circuitsoft Hello - I'm writing a web API that basically returns a success/failure value. I was planning for success to return 200, and failure to return 500.
20:09 Circuitsoft Is there a specified mimetype for "empty response"?

23:21 pdurbin Circuitsoft: to me 500 meant something terribly wrong happened inside my app, like a null pointer exception or something. I try to avoid this. But maybe I'm confused about what 500 is supposed to mean.
23:23 whartung a lot of the time, 500 errors are not "empty" rather they have text saying "the server done 'sploded", and typically text/html.
23:24 whartung same with 200 results.
23:24 whartung but in the end, the content type with a zero length payload is not a problem.
23:24 whartung you probably should not be using content type to designate status anyway
23:24 whartung ideally, you're respecting the content type of the request
23:25 whartung if they made an application/json request, kind of rude to send back text/html with the error message, right?

23:50 pdurbin right
