08:50 prologic dotplus ahh
08:50 prologic yeah my UX experience/opinions are pretty much the same
08:50 prologic they're all "copying" each other IHMO
08:50 prologic i.e: copiny "Slack"
11:52 pdurbin Slack has a lot of features that I've never used or barely used. When Mozilla set out to replace IRC, I liked how they said they're looking for something that's also "text first".
12:07 prologic sometimes I feel that the simplest things are the best
12:07 prologic I've never understood why we need to keep reinventing the same things over and over
12:08 prologic IRC is actually "good enough" IHMO really
12:09 prologic My biggest gripe has always been that's there's just too many things, too many ways and not enough unification
12:09 prologic but then again that's what  the Internet was (is?) all about? interconnected network of computers
12:23 pdurbin I thought the big problem with IRC is the lack of history. I thought this was already part of IRCv3 but this pull request hasn't been merged: https://github.com/ircv3/ircv3-specifications/pull/393
12:28 pdurbin Ah, in https://github.com/prologic/eris/issues/53 you link to https://github.com/ircv3/ircv3-specifications/blob/master/extensions/batch/chathistory-3.3.md as a spec.
15:43 dotplus I think the big complaints against IRC are 1) lack of history 2) lack of threading 3) server software is old, diverse-in-a-bad-way (poorly/incompletely supports the spec(s)), abandoned, hard to understand/manage/operate/maintain 4) "it's too difficult"
15:45 dotplus #1 was always a bit of a weak complaint because there have always been various ways to keep history (server-side or client-side) and one could argue that building history/logging in breaks the unixy "do one thing, well". The others are real problems, IMO.
15:48 dotplus (And no images/emojis/reactions/reacjis/etc. in the protocol is a feature not a bug; nothing to stop that sort of thing being supported client-side) :)
