Time S Nick Message
00:07 prologic https://pump.mills.io/
00:07 prologic Running Pump.io
00:07 prologic It s "not too bad"
00:08 prologic some useability UI/UX quirks but otherwise does what it says on the tin
00:08 prologic decentralized, federated twitter-like social network
00:49 pdurbin cool, but can I follow it from mastodon?
01:05 prologic I believe you can - yes
01:05 prologic I should be james@pump.mills.io
01:05 prologic try it and LMK?
01:06 prologic I'm curious about Mastodon but have no interested in signing up or running my own (mostly becuase Ruby uggh)
01:11 prologic hmm
01:11 prologic The fact I have to leave my own instance to follow another person, view their profile or read their posts is weird
01:11 prologic its very counter intuitive
01:46 prologic pdurbin So What do you like about Mastodon?
01:46 prologic Also... Pump (at least the UI/UX) is pretty horrible
01:46 prologic I'm not impressed to be brutally honest
01:46 prologic and I've been giving it a serious go over at https://pump.mills.io/ for the last few hours
01:47 prologic My wf (Writefreely) blog however is super awesome
01:47 prologic I'll definately keep that and write a few times a week
10:02 pdurbin prologic: I can't follow that address. I like the idea of Mastodon and the fediverse, that it's federated. No centralized control, like the Internet itself, for the most part.
10:32 prologic I see
10:32 prologic You like what iI want too
10:32 prologic I want something like Twitter
10:32 prologic but federated and decentralised
10:32 prologic I run my instnace
10:33 prologic you run your instnace
10:33 prologic we don't leave each other's instances to follow each other's activities
10:33 prologic full e2e encryption
10:33 prologic data is trasmitted between instances on demand based on connections and key exchanges
10:36 pdurbin Pretty much. The difference might be that I don't currently host much except static websites. I don't want to host my own email, for example (even though email is federated), because it's too much work.
10:43 pdurbin Also, I think you care more about end to end encryption than I do. I've been playing around with XMPP recently and these days something called OMEMO is enabled by default in a lot of places but it's interfering with my ability to read history (scrollback) from multiple clients. So I turn it off.
12:06 prologic joined #openknot
17:09 pdurbin And I'm sure 99% of people don't want to run a server. :)
17:13 pdurbin I do like the idea of controlling your identity. I played with OpenID back when it was new. I put a little PHP script on my server or something. But I've kind of given up. Now I just always log in to stuff through Google or GitHub if I can.
17:14 pdurbin Even if you run your own server you're still just renting your domain name.
20:02 pdurbin prologic: some feedback I gave in 2013 about pump.io: https://github.com/pump-io/pump.io/issues/440
22:43 prologic pdurbin yeah
22:45 prologic The think about  PUmp though is the porject has failed
22:45 prologic its run out of stream
22:45 prologic there are BIG issues with the codebase and system as it stands today
22:45 prologic even if you can get it running (which I did after *much* pain)
22:46 prologic You don't care about e2e enc -- that's fine
22:46 prologic But you also believe 99% of folks would not want to host their own
22:46 prologic okay
22:46 prologic But both of those things which are very likely true of most people doesn't mean we can't have both :)
22:51 prologic There are other issues too
22:51 prologic even if you were to build a new "thing"
22:51 prologic What would compell people to use it?
22:51 prologic There are so many alternatives and people have their own "favourites"
