dotplus: more on Gitter topics via IRC (a reply to what you wrote here): https://gitter.im/gitterHQ/irc-bridge/archives/2016/10/03 |

but I'm not gonna get excited/invested in a proprietary tool/protocol/platform for communication. |

Understandable but I'm glad that Gitter is succeeding. Because it encourages transparency, I think it's a better choice for open source projects than Slack. |

I expect I would agree it's a better choice than slack, but that's a pretty low bar. IMO, the best that I'm aware of is IRC + email (preferably integrating into an issue tracker) with archives, and a disciplined approach to taking/publishing notes from voice or in-person to those same email archives. |

dotplus: email archives sure, but do you also favor IRC archives? |

it depends on the nature of the channel. I can see the appeal of unarchived channels, but within the scope of 'open source software development' I'm generally in favour of public archives |

yeah, I'm talking about open source projects |

yeah, even within that scope I can see the appeal of unarchived channels occasionally, but 'archive by default' is a good policy IMO. |

It's on my mind because I read this over the weekend: http://producingoss.com/en/irc.html#irc-archiving |

"Although it is possible to publicly archive everything that happens in an IRC channel, it's not necessarily expected. IRC conversations are nominally public, but many people think of them as informal and ephemeral conversations. Users may be careless with grammar, and often express opinions (for example, about other software or other programmers) that they wouldn't want preserved forever in a searchable |

online archive. Of course, there will sometimes be excerpts that get quoted elsewhere, and that's fine. But indiscriminate public logging may make some users uneasy. If you do archive everything, make sure you state so clearly in the channel topic, and give a URL to the archive." |

I certainly agree with the last sentence. |

"this channel is logged to http://irclog.greptilian.com/openknot/today " is in the topic here, which I think is clear enough |
