12:09 Eliza_S Hi there !
12:09 aditsu hi
12:17 Eliza_S Guys , do you have any advice of what book should I start with as a beginner in Java ?
12:19 aditsu I would recommend the oracle java tutorials - https://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/
12:21 Eliza_S So that would be a good start.
12:21 Eliza_S I know the oracle tutorials
12:21 Eliza_S did you also had a book at the beginning?
12:22 aditsu I don't think I learned from a book
12:22 Eliza_S And what other channel I can join here in order to find more about Java ?
12:22 Eliza_S A!
12:22 Eliza_S It seems easy though in comparison wtih other programming languages
12:23 aditsu there's ##java , but they can be quite rude
12:23 Eliza_S I could not join that channel
12:24 Eliza_S I don't know from what reason
12:24 Eliza_S But I know people tend to be rude with the beginners here
12:24 Eliza_S :)
12:24 aditsu well, not in this channel :)
12:24 Eliza_S That's great
12:24 Eliza_S :P
12:25 aditsu I heard of "Head First Java", not sure how good it is, but it's probably ok
12:25 Eliza_S on freenode ?
12:25 aditsu I mean the book
12:26 Eliza_S A! sorry
12:26 aditsu I don't know other general java channels
12:26 Eliza_S So , if you don't mind , how did you learn it? I know that we all have our own way of learning
12:28 aditsu mainly from the tutorials (online)
12:28 aditsu I knew other languages before that
12:29 Eliza_S A! so I guess that helped to learn it faster
12:29 aditsu yeah
12:30 Eliza_S How can I ask how much time did it take you to learn it ? Of course, it depends on each individual...but just asking
12:30 aditsu I think I also had an introductory course in uni, but I didn't really use java at that time so I forgot most of it
12:32 aditsu I probably took a week or 2 to learn the basics, maybe a couple of months to get familiar with it
12:36 Eliza_S Oh ! I get your point. So at this point ,how many language to you use/know ?
12:37 aditsu I know many languages, at different levels of proficiency
12:38 Eliza_S Well , I know that's the key somehow..to know as many languages as you can
12:38 Eliza_S How about C++?
12:39 aditsu I used to be great at C++, I haven't used it in recent years though so I forgot some
12:40 Eliza_S oh wow
12:41 Eliza_S that's great though...
12:42 Eliza_S People adviced me to start with Java , although I wanted to start with C++
12:42 aditsu java is definitely easier
12:42 aditsu but for a first language, I would recommend python
12:44 Eliza_S why not java?
12:44 Eliza_S I did a bit of python
12:44 aditsu it's still fairly complicated for a beginner
12:45 Eliza_S I'm gonna give it a try
12:45 Eliza_S I like it so far
12:45 Eliza_S I'm very persistent
12:46 aditsu alright
12:47 Eliza_S Thank you for being so kind in answering to my questions
12:47 aditsu haha no worries
12:49 Eliza_S I'll come back everytime I have a question though :))
12:50 aditsu sure, I'm going out soon but will be around later
12:50 Eliza_S Great! Good to know ! See you later on then
12:50 Eliza_S Have a nice day
12:50 Eliza_S and once again , thanks :)
14:08 pdurbin Eliza_S: if it helps, I learned a little Java from a book in the 90s but I when helped me a lot was a class I took maybe 10 years ago. It was sort of a intermediate class, I guess, but they covered the basics to get everyone up to speed. Like aditsu I also recommend the official tutorials from Oracle.
15:34 Eliza_S Hi pduribin! Thank you for the advice. I'm already trying the offcial tutorials from Oracle. I'm also looking for a book, but I guess it has to not be an old one , something more updated. I wanna solve exercises from the book too so that I can learn faster
15:40 Eliza_S .
15:54 pdurbin I wonder if there are any katas out there for Java. They can be fun.
15:55 Eliza_S I never heard of such thing
15:55 Eliza_S :)
15:57 pdurbin https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kata_(programming)
16:02 Eliza_S I knew it has something to do with martial arts , but I just just not able to make the connection haha
16:02 Eliza_S Thanks :()
16:16 pdurbin Yeah, I only mentioned it because you said you like exercises.
16:17 Eliza_S yes, this is a way that I like to learn.
16:17 pdurbin I've seen katas where the test suite is failing and your job is to fix the code to get the tests passing. Pretty neat. I forget what language that was.
16:17 Eliza_S Makes it easier for me
17:07 aditsu Eliza_S: I found this: https://www.w3resource.com/java-exercises/
17:12 Eliza_S oh great! Thank you so much!
17:13 Eliza_S That is what I was looking for
17:13 Eliza_S :)
