made an eBook version of his 8-bit Memoirs project |

mr_lou: hmm, on Android, it says "Can't open file" for the epub. Usually it gets imported into Play Books. |
14:24 |
|
mr_lou |
Weird. :-/ |
14:24 |
|
mr_lou |
Works fine on all the readers I've tested on, including one for JavaME. |
14:27 |
|
mr_lou |
Faulty download maybe? |
14:27 |
|
mr_lou |
pdurbin, Try re-downloading. |
14:47 |

mr_lou |
pdurbin, Girlfriend has no problem opening on Android with Lithium. |
14:47 |
|
mr_lou |
What reader are you using? |
14:48 |
|
pdurbin |
Play Books. It's built in to Android. |
14:52 |
|
mr_lou |
pdurbin, Play Books also works here. She has to "upload to play books" first though. Can't find any version number anywhere... |
14:54 |
|
pdurbin |
Ah, glad it works for her. |
14:56 |
|
mr_lou |
It's the first time I've ever created an ePub, so it's likely I've done something wrong. |
15:00 |
|
pdurbin |
I've never made an ePub either but I always go for them over PDF on mobile. |
15:45 |
|
mr_lou |
pdurbin, Had someone else test with Play Books, also works fine. Are you sure your download is alright? |

When I tap it in "Files" I see META-INF and other stuff. |

Weird. |
17:32 |
|
mr_lou |
Sorry I don't know what's wrong. |
17:33 |
|
mr_lou |
It was created with Calibre. |
17:33 |
|
pdurbin |
That's ok, I just thought I'd give you a heads up. |
17:42 |
|
mr_lou |
Yea, thanks. |
17:42 |
|
mr_lou |
Will see if anyone else complains. I don't expect a whole lot of interest though. |
18:00 |
|
pdurbin |
well, more people can read PDFs than Blu-rays so it's good to put it out there |
18:02 |
|
mr_lou |
Maybe, but the PDF doesn't contain the 5 hours of audio and 9 hours of video. :-/ |
18:02 |
|
pdurbin |
:-/ |
18:03 |
|
mr_lou |
ePub3 supposedly should be able to though - but who'd be interested in a 23 gb ePub? ;-) |
18:04 |
|
pdurbin |
maybe in 5 years |
18:05 |
|
mr_lou |
:-) |
18:06 |

I like the Blu-ray version. It's like a small library for myself. All my old music, and videos of old games. Nice and handy. |
18:06 |
|
mr_lou |
Very nostalgic |
18:06 |
|
mr_lou |
I'll probably be happy I made it when I get old. |
18:06 |
|
mr_lou |
....older. |
18:06 |
|
pdurbin |
heh |
18:06 |
|
pdurbin |
What about an online version? Streaming or whatever. |
18:07 |
|
mr_lou |
There is one. |
18:07 |
|
mr_lou |
HTTP source and WebDAV source. Can be played with Kodi v18. |
18:07 |
|
pdurbin |
cool |
18:07 |
|
mr_lou |
Yea, Kodi v18 can play a Blu-ray folder structure remotely. |
18:08 |
|
pdurbin |
haven't heard of it but cool |
18:08 |
|
mr_lou |
VLC can too in theory, but they didn't think about it, so it times out. But you can mount a HTTP source in both Linux and Windows, and then just tell VLC to play the mounted drive. Except it times out. |
18:09 |
|
mr_lou |
Because obviously it's slower. |
18:09 |
|
pdurbin |
ah "formerly XBMC" |
18:09 |
|
mr_lou |
Yes |
18:10 |
|
pdurbin |
I'm still mostly a DVD guy. I can just about anything from interlibrary loan. |
18:11 |
|
mr_lou |
I'm curious about how to program a DVD. |
18:11 |
|
mr_lou |
But that's just yet another one of million things I'd like to learn, but never will learn, because I don't have the time. |
18:12 |
|
mr_lou |
I prefer Blu-ray for the resolution and being able to code Java apps for it. |
18:13 |
|
mr_lou |
I store personal family videoalbums on Blu-ray. Long lasting that way, and lets me keep FullHD resolution. It becomes a "playable backup" that way. |
18:13 |
|
pdurbin |
I don't have a Blu-ray reader or burner. |
18:15 |
|
mr_lou |
I don't understand why people don't have a Blu-ray player these days. It's 15 years old. But I've also experienced people saying they didn't have one, but they did. They just didn't know. They still called it a DVD player. |
18:15 |
|
pdurbin |
I bought an external Superdrive so I could play DVDs on my iMac. I don't think Apple sells Blu-ray players. |
18:17 |
|
mr_lou |
http://www.techguide.com.au/reviews/bddvd-reviews/how-to-watch-blu-ray-movies-on-your-mac/ |
18:19 |
|
mr_lou |
You don't actually need a physical Blu-ray drive to play 8-bit Memoirs though. You just need a software Blu-ray player. Then you can just download the ISO from 8bitMemoirs.com |
18:19 |
|
mr_lou |
I don't know how good the software Blu-ray players are for Mac though. |
18:20 |
|
mr_lou |
VLC and Kodi works for Linux and Windows, but they're not the best. PowerDVD is the best for Windows. Supports all features of 8-bit Memoirs, including mouse support. |
19:07 |
|
pdurbin |
I don't know. I appreciate the advice but watching Blu-ray on Mac feels like it's going against the grain. |

I never tried to open an epub on Android before, tried it now and it asks me what to open it with, the last option is "Upload to Play Books" but I don't want to do that |
21:53 |
|
aditsu |
it seems to work in "Perfect Viewer" |
21:54 |
|
aditsu |
but it doesn't seem to let me zoom |
21:55 |
|
aditsu |
and in Ghost Commander it opens it as an archive (META-INF and stuff) |
21:57 |
|
aditsu |
side note: I have a kindle, and I usually put pdfs on it :p |
21:59 |
|
aditsu |
actually got a book from Amazon, which was somehow not compatible with my kindle; I converted it to pdf and copied it by hand, works fine :p |
22:01 |
|
aditsu |
hmmm I have okular built without epub support, let me change that |
22:09 |
|
pdurbin |
Ah, glad it works on your Android phone aditsu. Not sure why it doesn't work on mine. I even bought it from Google (Moto x4). |
22:10 |
|
aditsu |
pdurbin: what app does it open it with? |
22:11 |
|
aditsu |
huh, okular (on the computer) is really bad at epub.. |
22:12 |
|
pdurbin |
aditsu: well, that's the thing, it won't open at all. And with this phone from Google I'm always on the latest version of Android so you'd think it would work. |
22:13 |
|
aditsu |
you said you "see META-INF and other stuff", what app do you see those in? |
22:14 |
|
pdurbin |
the "Files" app |
22:14 |
|
aditsu |
ok, so it opens it in Files then |
22:15 |
|
aditsu |
I don't see to have an app called "Files" |
22:15 |
|
aditsu |
seem* |
22:15 |
|
pdurbin |
yeah, so the download was probably fine. I couldn't see an easy way to check the md5 but I assume a match. |
22:15 |
|
pdurbin |
what version of Android are you on? |
22:15 |
|
aditsu |
6 |
22:16 |
|
pdurbin |
I'm on 8.1.0. |
22:16 |
|
aditsu |
can you long-press on the epub and open with something else? |
22:18 |
|
pdurbin |
when I tap "open with" it says "no apps can perform this action" |
22:18 |
|
aditsu |
huh, and you have "Play Books"? |
22:18 |
|
aditsu |
on the phone |
22:21 |
|
pdurbin |
yeah, for a lot of epubs (but not all), I just tap on the epub and it opens in Play Books and I wait a bit for it to import and then I can read it |
22:25 |
|
aditsu |
I don't know then.. |
22:26 |
|
pdurbin |
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ |
22:26 |
|
aditsu |
tried redownloading? |
22:26 |
|
pdurbin |
yeah |
22:29 |
|
pdurbin |
aditsu: how into JPA are you? I just watched "Mastering JPA Performance" at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkQhFs2em2k&feature=youtu.be&t=10774 |
22:30 |
|
aditsu |
I tried it once, seemed cool, then I ran into some problems and realized it's a nonsensical mess, and gave up on it :p |
22:31 |
|
aditsu |
it was probably around the time I started developing depeche |
22:31 |
|
aditsu |
btw, I'm considering a major API redesign for depeche |
