01:22 pdurbin The other day I was talking about Java 9 in here and I wrote up some more thoughts on how I don't think we should force our users to upgrade to a non-LTS release like Java 9: https://github.com/IQSS/dataverse/issues/4259
01:31 aditsu pdurbin: but what are the reasons *for* switching to java 9?
01:32 aditsu so far I only know it has improved http/2 support
01:32 pdurbin aditsu: well, "end of public updates" for Java 8 is Sep 2018. That means security patches. This is from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/eol-135779.html
01:35 aditsu that means you don't need to worry about it until then :)
01:35 aditsu also, users can upgrade to java 9 and still run a project made for java 8
01:36 pdurbin I'm more talking about forcing users to run Java 9. Making our app only run on Java 9.
01:36 aditsu yes, and I'm asking why you would even consider doing that
01:38 pdurbin Well, that's what we did when we moved from Java 7 to Java 8. We changed our Maven "target" to 1.8.
01:55 pdurbin It was the right thing to do because Java 7 wasn't going to keep getting security patches.
01:58 aditsu so far, still no reason; "what we did when we moved from Java 7 to Java 8" is completely irrelevant, and availability of java security patches is a reason for users to upgrade, but not a reason for you to switch and force users to upgrade
01:58 aditsu and even if it was a reason, it wouldn't apply until late 2018
02:01 aditsu switching to java 8 can be justified by the benefits you get from the new language features
02:04 pdurbin I guess you're saying we could keep our app compatible with Java 6 or some other older release that doeson't get security patches and let our users decide when to upgrade to a version of Java that gets security patches.
02:04 aditsu sure, unless you have actual reasons to switch to a newer version (as I just gave an example)
02:08 pdurbin Well, Java 8 had a lot of shiny new features. :)
02:08 aditsu yes, and I agree, but I was asking about java 9
02:12 pdurbin I'm not especially interested in any of the features in Java 9.
02:16 aditsu yeah, so then there's no need to upgrade
02:29 pdurbin yeah
05:15 mr_lou Since Java 9 prevents me from compiling Blu-ray Xlets, I'm hoping to be able to keep on using Java 8 forever.
05:15 mr_lou I mean JDK 8
