14:50 pdurbin mmm, love that new channel smell
15:53 bear joined #openknot
17:03 dotplus we should probably create hooks to notify this channel when PRs/Issues/Comments/Commits come into github
17:04 bear what is philbot written in - doing a github hook listener is easy enough
17:08 dotplus I think it's supybot so python
17:12 pdurbin is an instance of ilbot. note the "powered by" link at http://irclog.greptilian.com/openknot/2015-07-14
17:17 pdurbin and no, it's not a supybot (searchbot is though)
17:18 bear it might be too much to add github stuff to ilbot - it's pretty focused on logging
17:20 pdurbin someone could make an openknotbot :)
17:21 bear i'm working on that right now :)
17:21 bear going to grab an existing python github bot and deploy it
17:24 bear you may want to start the process to take over the irc nick "knot" -- according to nickserv it was last used in 2013
18:07 dotplus do we care enough? there are probably lots of nicks that might possibly be relevant. I wasn't planning on registering relevant domain names yet either
18:11 bear that is an ocd thing with me - so yea, not a priority

19:45 prologic add me to the org?
19:45 prologic :)
19:46 prologic dotplus, you can go to your account settings and notifications in ghthub
19:46 prologic and "route" different org's to different email addresses
20:02 dotplus I invited you & bear to the org as soon as I created it.
20:02 dotplus yeah I found the answer about per-org notifications, thanks
20:50 dotplus there was a large and very repetitive thread on a mailing list I read over the last few days. I point it out to you because I think it sheds light on how (technical) people view various communication tech. https://lists.lopsa.org/pipermail/discuss/2015-July/thread.html
20:51 dotplus several people brought 2 important styles of communcation: synchronous vs. asynchronous and threaded vs. non-threaded. These are areas we must discuss
21:32 prologic oh completely agree
21:32 prologic is async vs. sync kind of like active vs passive
21:45 bear for me it's a function of: what message am I going to allow to take my attention vs what message is going to sit in a list for me to review later
21:50 prologic yeah okay fair enough
21:50 prologic I think it all means essentially the same thing
21:50 prologic but we probably should use the terms active/passive
21:51 prologic rather then the more technie terms async/sync
21:51 prologic :)
21:51 bear +1
22:18 dotplus I'm not sure... a) I don't think we need to be too concerned about catering to the non-tech audience, because honestly, it's not likely to ever get used by non-technical people, certainly not for a long time and there will be plenty of opportunity to make non-technical usage guides later b) I think we're still groping around for terminology but I think we might need the difference between a/sync and active vs. passive.
22:18 dotplus sync/async is about message delivery at least as much as it is about when messages get *read*.
22:19 dotplus active vs passive has connotations about the actor (human vs. automated)
22:22 dotplus to elaborate, I think at this early stage, we shouldn't attempt to limit our search for precise and accurate understanding by trying to phrase for non-tech audiences. we can craft the message for the audience(s) later.
23:26 prologic sure
23:26 prologic :)
